Fall Meeting, September 26, 2009

Editor’s and President’s Message

August 2009

Dear Fellow AMT Members,

First of all, I’d like to thank our invited speakers, and members who attended the Spring Meeting on May 2, 2009 at Brookline College in Albuquerque.

Our appreciation goes to Cheryl Kindred, campus director at Brookline College, who offered us a new “home” for our state society’s meeting. We also thank Andrew Webb, the director of education, and Michelle Thomas, the chair of healthcare programs, and Veronica Grine at Brookline College.

April Cole, a new graduate and new AMT member, made her first presentation as a speaker at the Spring Meeting.  We are proud of her accomplishments as a first-timer, and of her work at San Juan Cancer Center in Farmington, NM.

The Fall issue of El Tecnico, August 2009, is a special issue commemorating 50 years of service of the New Mexico State Society of American Medical Technologists (NMSSAMT).  NMSSAMT was officially founded on April 23, 1959, as shown by the registration document from the NM Public Regulation Commission.

Deborah Vance served for 9-10 years (1987-89; 1993- 2001) as president; and Hildie Polasky served for 6-7 years (2001- 2008) as president. Our very own from NM, Barbara Ware, has been serving AMT at the state, regional and national levels since 1984, and has received 10 awards. Our state society has been in the Honor Roll for the eleventh (11th) time.

The cover of the journal shows a Yucca plant blooming with flowers.  The picture was taken at the entrance to the Henderson Fine Arts Performance Center (concerts and cultural events) at San Juan College, Farmington, NM.  The Yucca flower is the state’s official flower.  The motif color of the cover is green symbolizing “going green.”  Eventually the “El Tecnico” will be in electronic format a year from now, Fall 2010, after 2 issues with reminders.  We might come up with an experimental electronic issue (third issue) this year in late November to get feedbacks from members at random.

Rachael Porlas, Robert Reid and I, attended the 71st AMT National Convention in Minneapolis, MN in June 2009. Details of our attendance are presented in the journal in the delegate’s reports. The delegate’s report of Rachael Porlas, RMA, state society treasurer, is a very comprehensive one that is covered in 6 pages.  It provides an account on the sessions attended by Rachael. Another delegate’s report was written by Robert Reid, who attended the AMT national convention for the first time.  Robert received the Chester Dziekonski Educational Grant.  Pictures from the national convention and from the state society meeting are included.

In commemorating the 50th anniversary, a special article on ”Philosophical, Historical and Societal Influences on Health Care” has been included.  Health care reform is currently the top topic being debated.  It is therefore, a good way to look back on history and see how health care has been shaped or influenced by different individuals, groups and organizations.

The Spring Issue of El Tecnico, April 2009, was a special one also. It was dedicated to the late Darlene Anderson who served the state society for 47 years from 1961 to 2008.  A memorial article was written about her.

The cover of the journal showed an abstract representation of New Mexico.  The motif color of the cover was blue reflecting our sadness and sympathy for the loss of a very dedicated member, Darlene.

Both the Spring and Fall issues are special because of the contributions made by past and present active members and officers, the late Robert Freeman and Darlene Anderson, and other individuals and groups who have brought the NMSSAMT to where it is now on its 50th year.

Our journal will be in electronic format in the next Fall issue in 2010. You can access future issues of El Tecnico at www.nmssamt.com. Those of you who wish to continue to receive a paper copy, please email your request to henry.oh@msn.com on or before May 1, 2010.

I strongly encourage all members to support our state society by attending our meetings, and contributing to the improvement of NMSSAMT. I look forward to seeing you at the Fall Meeting on September 26, 2009.

Best regards,

Dr. Henry Oh

Again, my sincere thanks to everyone for all the hard work you put forth on behalf of AMT.  Without the work that takes place at the state level, we would not have AMT!  It is appreciated!

I would like to encourage everyone to visit the new AMT web to keep abreast of the daily changes.  The manuals and forms needed to conduct the business of your state societies are being added as they are reviewed for accuracy and to be sure they are current.  To sign in to the members’ only area you will need to have your AMT identification number available.  You can renew your membership, help a friend download an application, contact AMT Office with questions, order continuing education modules, track your continuing education credits and much more online now.  The site speaks very professionally for AMT as internet cruisers look at it.  There is even an AMT store!

If you would like to serve on a National Committee but were not at the Convention to sign up, please let me know ASAP so I can turn your name in.  The committees will be selected at the Board of Directors meeting in October.

Also, remember to start looking for the state publications online.  Many states have already gone to electronic publications and others are going to them.  You will be notified and given the option of receiving a paper publication if you do not have computer access and your state has chosen to publish electronically.  So, all members will still be receiving their publication in some format.  This has been a concern.

If you know of speakers you feel would be appropriate and available for the 2010 meeting, July 12 – 17 in Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada or if you would like to give a presentation applicable to your discipline, please let AMT Diane Powell, our AMT Educational Program and National Meeting Director, know and/or  Scientific/Speakers Committee Chair Kay Fergason.  Planning for the 2010 meeting has already begun and now is the time to start planning and saving.

My contact information has changed as I have retired.  Please contact me at the following address if I can be of assistance in any way.

Respectfully,

Barbara Ware
