Fall Meeting (To be Announced)

Editor’s and President’s Message

To My Fellow AMT Members,

First of all, I’d like to thank the members who attended the Fall Meeting on September 26, 2009 in Albuquerque. We had excellent speakers and a good attendance record.

During the past year, we published 2 important issues of El Tecnico.  The Spring 2009 issue was dedicated to our beloved member, Darlene Anderson, who passed away in October 2008. Darlene served our state society for 47 years. The Fall 2009 issue was an anniversary issue commemorating the 50th year of the New Mexico State Society of American Medical Technologists (NMSSAMT).

This current issue celebrates a milestone of El Tecnico, for winning first place in the journal publications category. It’s the first time that our journal made it to the top place. My associate editor, Robert Reid, and I have worked hard to achieve excellence for this journal.

Our state society will be well represented during the 72nd AMT National Convention because 2 of our members will receive recognition.  Barbara Ware, MT, has been selected for the Becky award, and Rachael Porlas, RMA, for the Distinguished Achievement Award. Robert Reid and I will be speakers also at the convention.

I’d like to thank Jim Cheslek, Dean of Academic Affairs, and Eric Rudie, Campus President, of Brown Mackie College, for offering their facility to host our state society meeting.  Brown Mackie College has opened its new campus in Albuquerque, NM.

Last, but not the least, I’d like to thank Barbara Ware for her support and contributions during her tenure as Western District Councillor. She did an excellent job, and therefore, deserves her selection for the Becky Award.

We would like to welcome our new Western District Councillor, Ken Hawker.

Thank you all for your continued support to our state society.  I’m hoping to see you on May 1, 2010.

Best Regards,

Henry Oh

Councillor's Message

Greetings to my Western District colleagues:

The AMT Council met in Las Vegas on February 3 and 4 at the site of our upcoming 2010 National Convention.  Diane Powell has done another outstanding job of planning this year’s meeting.  We will be gathering at the J.W. Marriott Resort at Summerlin July 12 -17.  Hopefully many of you are planning to attend since this meeting is in the heart of our district.  As you plan for this meeting please be sure to include this year’s Leadership Session in your plans.  Your councilors have put together a program that will be beneficial and enjoyable.

It is not too early to begin looking toward our 2011 meeting.  We will be in Miami August 1 – 6, 2011. This meeting will be a joint AMT-CASMET meeting.

Between now and July there are some special opportunities to recognize your peers and colleagues.  March 7 – 13 is National Dental Assistant Week and April 18 – 24 is National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week.  It is not too early to be planning special activities to honor these members of our organization.

The AMT office staff has recently been augmented by the addition of Camille Murray in the new role of Education Manager.  She will be working with our AMT leadership to expand and improve our AMT provided continuing education opportunities.  In addition to recording sessions at our national educational meeting, she will also be working to develop our CE website and some self-paced training modules.  Please take time to welcome Camille to AMT when you meet her in Las Vegas.

As we continue our efforts to provide instant access to state society information for our members and prospective members I would like to encourage your to move forward with web site development for your state societies on the AMT home page.  Kathy Cilia at the AMT office is available and willing to assist in this activity.  They have developed some templates that many of you have already begun using.

I am developing plans to visit each of our Western District societies over the next two years.  Thanks for letting me know when your meetings are scheduled.  I will be contacting you once my schedule is set.  In the mean time, I look forward to meeting with you in Las Vegas this July.

Until then,

Ken Hawker

Ken Hawker, MT (AMT)

Western District Councilor
