The Spring 2006 meeting for NMSSAMT was held on Saturday September 24th at the Pima Medical Institute in Albuquerque.

Our first speaker was Laurel Christensen, CLC.  She spoke about the final Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) rules and Equivalent Quality Control (EQC).  The intent of the final rules is to promote development, implementation, delivery, monitoring, and improvement of laboratory services.  There are three areas of concern which are: pre-analytic, what happens to the test before its tested, proper paperwork, specimen handling, and how testing materials are treated; analytic, what happens to the specimen during the test, testing environment, testing materials, and how the test is done; and post-analytic, what happens to the test results after the test on the specimen is completed.

Some of the changes are in nomenclature.  Such as, "non-waived" replaces high and moderate complexity testing.  There are a large number of waived tests and the remaining tests tend to be of high complexity.  Waived tests require no special personnel training. However, the requirements for personnel performing complex testing did not change.

There are other changes, such as, how often quality control specimens should be run and how reference ranges should be determined.  All laboratory directors and supervisors must be familiar with any and all changes in the CLIA Rules.

Our second speaker was Gerald Davis, MT who presented a review of the production and maturation of red blood cells.  He showed slides demonstrating the various stages of development as well as normal and abnormal red blood cells.  Gerald discussed some medical conditions which cause various changes in the red cells.

After lunch, Gerald continued his presentation with a review of the production and maturation of white blood cells.  He showed slides demonstrating the morphology of developing stages including normal and abnormal white blood cells.

Gerald discussed various forms of leukemia and other conditions that produce blasts and early cells in the blood stream.  He also covered platelet formation and a variety of diseases that can cause a shortage of peripheral platelets which can lead to abnormal bleeding.

Gerald provided those who perform hematology procedures with a good review and others with a good introduction of Red and White blood cells.

Business and Board meetings were held following a brief break.  Our next meeting will be held at Pima Medical Institute on Saturday September 23.
